FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Publishourdreams.com a publisher?
Publishourdreams.com only provides services to facilitate self-publishing. If you choose to use your own ISBN or publish a book without an ISBN you will be the publisher of your book. On the other hand if you use the ISBN allotted to Publish Our Dreams then Publish Our Dreams will be the publisher. Please note that we reserve the right to allocate or deny our ISBNs to the book.

What is offset printing?
To quote from Wikipedia: “Offset printing is a commonly used printing technique where the inked image is transferred (or “offset”) from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface.” The plate making process is costly. But once you create a plate, you can use it to generate a large number of copies. Therefore, printing just a few copies is not cost-effective with offset printing, but the cost per copy decreases as the number of copies goes up.

What is Print on demand (POD)?
It is a printing technology/business process wherein a book is not printed till an order is placed for it, thereby removing the need to print and store bulk copies. This was not traditionally possible with offset printing where a minimum print run of 500 copies is required to make it economically viable. The advancement in digital printing now makes it possible for a complete book to be printed and bound in a few hours with as many or as few copies as you want. Since no plates are made, unlike as in offset printing, you can make as many changes and print just a single copy every time. Per unit cost remains the same, so the author does not block money on printing advance copies. The printing cost is paid for when the book is printed.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Print on Demand over offset printing for books?
Advantages of POD

  • Technical set-up is usually quicker than for offset printing.
  • Large inventories of a book or print material do not need to be kept in stock, reducing storage, handling costs, and inventory accounting costs.
  • There is little or no waste from unsold products.
  • The time taken to print and bind a press ready file is just a few hours.

Disadvantages of POD

  • POD is not effective for large quantities.
  • While the printing quality for coloured images is good in POD offset printing delivers better results

Are Print on Demand (POD) and self publishing the same?
No. Print on Demand (POD) is just a way of printing and can be used for any book. Self-publishing is a process where the author chooses not to go to a traditional publisher and publishes his/her book on their own.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Self Publishing?
Advantages of self publishing:

  • No waiting to hear from the publisher.
  • No rejection. Traditional publishers will only take on those books which they see making a profit.
  • If you are an established name in your area of expertise then this is the way to provide add-on material for your seminars.
  • If you want to promote your business or organization.
  • You want to keep all rights to your work.
  • You can use your logo if you are a brand or an organization.
  • You control the end product. Since you are a part of all aspects of pre-publishing i.e. editing and designing you choose what your book looks like.
  • You decide the number of copies to be printed.
  • You decide the sale price of your book.

Disadvantages of self publishing:

  • You bear all costs
  • Access to distributors and retailers is limited. Marketing and promotion is your responsibility.
  • You’ll have to get your book reviewed and approach critics.
